What happens when a young, successful, computer-wiz businessman, with an aversion to traveling too far from home, suddenly finds himself thrown way out of his comfort zone on a week-long mission trip to a Mexican orphanage?
The answer is that life for the Huber family will never be the same again, and I feel sure that readers will never be quite the same after reading Robert's first book, From American Dream to God's Destiny. It is, as the author describes "A true story of surrendering self and finding purpose."
Interwoven through the story of the author's personal journey into God's destiny, is the story of Juan, a young Mexican boy, whose world was forever changed the day Mr. Huber made his first visit to the orphanage. The heart connection of Juan and Robert is a very special one, bringing joy and tears, heartache and blessing, as two cultures collide at God's direction.
The thing that struck me most powerfully about From American Dream to God's Destiny is the vulnerability of the author in sharing his story. Mr. Huber did not try to paint himself as a super-hero Christian, and he didn't tie everything up with a "happily ever after" ending. With transparent honesty, Robert shares with readers the battle he faced in leaving the life he had worked so hard to achieve, and the battles he has since faced in following God's call. It is this heartfelt genuineness that makes this autobiography so believable, receivable, and such a special treasure to read
In sharing his story, the author's desire is to stir his readers to believe that God has a call and destiny for their lives as well, and to seek to uncover that destiny for themselves. In this way, Mr. Huber's story does exactly what an excellent autobiography should do-it inspires and motivates.
From American Dream to God's Destiny is a story of love, faith and surrender, and it is not over yet. The Huber family story is continuing in Mexico today, and I can only hope that we will have the privilege of sharing Part 2 of that story in the future.
