Kathy Bruins and Michael Beukema know a little something about drama; they have been leading a drama ministry at their church for almost ten years. And their experience, as well as their love for the art of drama, shines brilliantly through the pages of their debut book, The Acts of Grace.

In The Acts of Grace, you will find more than simple skits and plays. Each drama (twelve in all) begins with a Scripture focus, as well as a brief devotional to prepare the hearts of those performing and enhance the spirit of the production itself. This is followed by a detailed description of the characters and props needed for the skit, as well as the overlying theme for that particular production, such as gossip, thankfulness, healing, spiritual gifts, and forgiveness, just to name a few.

The dramas themselves are finely-crafted and thought-provoking. In this reviewer's opinion, as the book progressed, each skit was better than the one before it, ending with a moving drama about mothers and healing relationships. The dialogue throughout is sensible and realistic, and the scenes play out naturally, like common, every day events. While some contain humor--including "SG Gameshow," a parody of the game show, "Jeopardy"--all contain straightforward, powerful messages for victorious Christian living.

Each script concludes with a brief paragraph of technical notes written by Michael Beukema, in which he gives useful tips on making the production as technically sound as it can be. Also included are simple diagram sketches of each scene, setting the stage for proper layout.

"The Acts of Grace" is a practical and excellent tool for any existing drama department, but this book is truly a must-have for anyone with a vision of starting up such a ministry in their church. No stone has been left unturned and the result is a comprehensive and well thought-out series of dramatic productions that has immeasurable potential to touch hearts and change lives.

Kathy Bruins and Michael Beukema state that it is their desire for the heart and passion of God to be seen and felt through each drama. This book, with the help of the Holy Spirit, will no doubt accomplish just that.
