When Miss Ariana Forsythe is sent to her aunt's house in London, she has little idea how her life will be affected. She is soon caught up in the Season in all its glory-and its shame. A scandal occurs and it has Ariana's name all over it! With the aid of one Mr. Phillip Mornay, said to be the paragon of London's fashion as well as its most favorite rogue, she regains her name and her reputation. Unfortunately, she loses her heart in the process. Determined to always keep God first, she realizes she might have to make a heart-wrenching decision.
Set during the days of the Prince Regent, Before the Season Ends by Linore Rose Burkard is a delightful tale about a young Christian woman experiencing her first Season. Ariana's steadfast faith in the height of London's decadence is a refreshing reassurance that not everyone was of a carnal nature in that time period, in spite of the Prince Regent's excesses and allowances. Mr. Phillip Mornay is also a man that many a woman would love to love in today's world. He is upstanding and honest, and willing to help Ariana cast off unjust rumors. There are other characters, like Aunt Bentley and Mr. Pellham, that round out the cast in support of both Ariana and Mr. Mornay.
I could see that Ms. Burkard really sought to tell a timeless tale, one that would affect us in today's society even while her characters were set over a hundred years ago. I think she has succeeded, at least with me. There were a few things that I stumbled over, but an editor could certainly smooth all of them out. They definitely did not detract from the story itself.
Like her predecessor, Jane Austen, Ms. Burkard wrote of characters who sought to live their lives with integrity. Though I don't know if Austen was a Christian, Ms. Burkard's own faith shines through Ariana and her determination to follow God's will.
As a whole, I was pleased with the book and quite happy with the ending. I would recommend Before the Season Ends to anyone.
